Physicians and Other Health Care Practitioners Currently Available.
Malpractice Claims.
Information on payments made for closed malpractice
claims is published on the internet by the
Florida
Department of Financial Services.
The information is available for insured
physicians,
dentists, podiatrists, HMOs, Hospitals, abortion clinics, ambulatory
surgical centers, crisis stabilization units, and other health care
facilities. Claims
paid by practitioners or institutions who do not purchase insurance
are not included. The information available on the Insurance Department
website includes the actual dollar amount paid by the insurer. The
Florida Insurance Department database can be searched either by
the name of the individual practitioner or institution or by county.
The malpractice information provided by the Florida
Insurance Department is based on reports which insurers in Florida
must file pursuant to Chapter
627.912 F.S. A

Information on the status of a health care practitioner's
license is also available on the Department of Health Health
Licensee Website. Information on disciplinary actions
taken by the Department of Health or licensing board is included
on the license verification site. However, for the most up to date
information, the Department of Health should be contacted directly.
The Department of Health will provide
files on
closed disciplinary cases and cases in which formal administrative
charges have been brought. Contact

Profiles of Health
Care Practitioners.
Effective July 1, 1999, the Department of Health
is required to publish on the internet profiles on
physicians,
chiropracters and podiatrists.
You can look up an individual practitioner's
Profile
by clicking HERE. To read the Profile
laws click
on the links in the lefthand column on the Department's profile
page.
The Department of Health provides a
Description
of Profiling on
its website. A practitioner's profile must, among other information,
include:
- Education;
- Hospital Affiliations;
- Specialty Certifications;
- Faculty Appointments;
- Final Disciplinary Actions within the last 10 years;
- Information
about criminal Offenses (there
are certain limitations on the information provided)
- Paid Malpractice Claims in excess of $5,000 in the last 10 years for physicians, and podiatrists.
- Address.
Penalties for a practitioner's failure to comply with the statutory
obligations to submit profile information can result in disciplinary action
including failure to have a license renewed.
