Us Your Opinion: How
Good Is Insurance Coverage For Mammography?
Medicare
Coverage
Medicare has expanded its coverage for mammograms as of January 1, 1998. Medicare will
now pay for an annual screening mammogram for any woman over 39 years of age covered by
Medicare without any deductible being required. Prior to this change, many women covered
by Medicare were only covered for screening mammography once every two years.

4101, amending 42 U.S.C. section 1395m, which expanded Medicare mammography
coverage. (To avoid having to browse down the entire text of this law, use the
"find" feature of your browser and search on "4101" until you come to
the provision on mammography. This may not work in all browsers. In Microsoft Internet
Explorer and Netscape 3.x, the "find" feature is on the "edit" menu.)
United
States Food and Drug Administration Mammography Facility Certification
In order to perform mammography, a facility must be certified by
the Food and Drug Administration. An FDA certified facility must have a
certificate from the FDA showing that it has been certified on display
so check for it. The certificate will show the time period for which
the facility has been approved. You can obtain information about
certification on the Food
and Drug Administration website. You can also obtain a list
of mammography facilities certified by the Food and Drug
Administration on the website.
National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
The federal Breast Cancer
Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000 gives states the option to
provide full Medicaid benefits to certain uninsured women who are
identified through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's
National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program to be in
need of treatment for breast or cervical cancer. You can obtain more
information about the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early
Detection Program including the Breast
Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000 from the website of
the National
Centers For Disease Control National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection
Program.
