Health Care Choices is a New York not-for-profit corporation dedicated to educating the public about the nation's health care system. Our goal is to assist patients, consumers and other purchasers of health care services, such as employers, understand and navigate the complexities of this system. We are exempt from federal taxation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Our work has been funded in part by the United Way of New York City. We are also a 501(c)(3) approved Health and Human Services Agency within the United Way of Tristate (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) Donor Choice System. You can designate us through your company's United Way Campaign in this region to receive contributions.

Principal Activities

• We provide information to assist individuals in finding, selecting and using different types of health insurance and managed care plans including health maintenance organizations ("HMOs") and indemnity insurance plans through such means as our Health Insurance Resource Center ;
We provide information on individual hospitals and physicians such as our Surgical Volume Information and Physician Profile Information;
• We provide information on federal and state legislative trends affecting key health care issues;
• We provide information on developments affecting the availability of high quality health care services;
• We provide employers and other group purchasers of insurance with information to help them evaluate different health plans;
• We conduct health policy research and issue studies such as our May, 1999 report Physician Profiling: A Survey of State Legislation;
• We sponsor conferences on critical issues such as our January 14, 1999 conference Health Care Quality: The New Frontier; and
• We issue publications such as our newsletter, Better Health Choices
